At Home

Updated: May 27, 2020

Having family items around the apartment has made Stay at Home orders comfortable for me. When furnishing my place, I rummaged through attics for decor that would give rooms personality and warmth. Many of these finishing touches were pulled from a midcentury modern aesthetic with brass and bamboo but it has all been anchored by one piece of art.

After serving in World War 2, my paternal grandfather studied graphic design here in Washington, DC. And, I absolutely treasure his portfolio. Junior lived around DuPont Circle across from what would have been the Israeli embassy except that they were not yet recognized as a country. When it became one though, he could see their celebrations from his bedroom window and “it was one heck of a party.” He loved being in this city so stories like that make me feel closer to my family while travel is restricted. Although only eight by ten inches, Junior’s work that has pride of place at home is dated to 1948- the same year he would have seen that party.
