I have spent Independence Day in Maryland with friends since 2016. To us, this tradition has become increasingly valuable as a halfway point for the passing years where we can slow down to catch up. Although COVID threatened our reunion this time, we all quarantined beforehand to continue it.
For 2020, we went to Deal Island. There was no public beach, no sizable one anyway, and few people there as such. However, that vacancy allowed us to be outside, to have dinners together, celebrate two missed birthdays with Smith Island cake, and play card games for the first time in 115+ days. The Fourth of July has always been special but I am especially grateful for it this year.
