When Georgetown became part of Washington, DC, the communities unified themselves by connecting streets that had been separated by Rock Creek. To do so, city planners would have had to demolish Dumbarton House which was one of the first residences built in the district. Rather than tear it down though, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America stepped in and paid for a team of horses to pull this Federal Period home up away from Q St NW. The move must have been incredible to see.
Dumbarton House has served as the NSCDA’s headquarters since then; but for me, there is a wonderful connection to my alma mater which makes the property feel a bit like home. The surrounding garden wall was designed by Fiske Kimball who established the UVA School of Architecture.
