New Flag Proposal: Mississippi

Updated: Jul 20, 2020

After seeing news yesterday about Mississippi voting to redesign their state flag, I was inspired to collaborate with Corrinne Ward at r2n2 arts to come up with the following concept.

Our proposal symbolizes Mississippi with a magnolia which is not only the state flower and tree but also references the Magnolia Flag, the first official state flag. This distinctive redesign uses the same red, white, and blue on the current state flag while also introducing yellow as an accent color for the magnolia blossom carpels and “In God we trust,” which has been specified as a requirement. Alternatively, in place of these words, one might choose the state motto of “Virtute et Armis.” The thin white stripe represents the Mississippi River and the vertical red stripe once again nods to the historic Magnolia Flag while switching it from right to the left side, moving this design forward in a new direction.
