My DuoLingo streak hit 100+ days this past week. The app has been a good start for Brazilian Portuguese but a friend recommended someone teaching in São Paulo to help me and today was my first lesson via Zoom.
Languages have been a great way to feel productive with my time during quarantine, and while I’ve been able to string basic sentences together in writing, I haven’t felt overly confident about speaking Portuguese. I've tried listening to Brazilian broadcasts and music to refine myself but I’ll admit that I’m thrown off by the various accents. Brazil is an extremely large and diverse country with five distinctly different regions that sound just as different as northern and southern or midwestern accents here plus two. It will be immensely helpful to have someone support me finding a voice.
Este é um momento de grande transformação. Eu não sei o que acontecerá. Eu não tenho soluções. Mas, estes momentos exigem o melhor dos povos. O importante não é o que você faz mas sim o modo como o faz. Eu seguirei em frente e uso meu tempo para fazer coisas novas como falar português. As coisas sempre melhoram com o tempo. Vai dar tudo certo.
